Chirality is a property of asymmetry important in several branches of science. The word chirality is derived from the Greek χείρ, "hand", a familiar chiral object. An object or a system is chiral if it is distinguishable from its mirror image; that is, it cannot be superposed onto it. Conversely, a mirror image of an achiral object, such as a sphere, cannot be distinguished from the object. A chiral object and its mirror image are called enantiomorphs or, when referring to molecules, enantiomers. A non-chiral object is called achiral and can be superposed on its mirror image. The term was first used by Lord Kelvin in 1893 in the second Robert Boyle Lecture at the Oxford University Junior Scientific Club which was published in 1894: I call any geometrical figure, or group of points, 'chiral', and say that it has chirality if its image in a plane mirror, ideally realized, cannot be brought to coincide with itself. Human hands are perhaps the most recognized example of chirality.

Handedness - In human biology, handedness is an individual's preferential use of one hand, known as the dominant hand, due to it being stronger, faster or more dextrous. The other hand, comparatively often the weaker, less dextrous or simply less subjectively preferred, is called the non-dominant hand.

Chiral drugs - Chemical compounds that come as mirror-image pairs are referred to by chemists as chiral or handed molecules. Each twin is called an enantiomer. Drugs that exhibit handedness are referred to as chiral drugs.

Chiral switch - A chiral switch is a chiral drug that has already approved as racemate but has been re-developed as a single enantiomer. The term chiral switching was introduced by Agranat and Caner in 1999 to describe the development of single enantiomers from racemate drugs.

Chiral inversion - Chiral inversion is the process of conversion of one enantiomer of a chiral molecule to its mirror-image version with no other change in the molecule. Chiral inversion happens depending on various factors and the energy barrier associated with the stereogenic element present in the chiral molecule.

Metachirality - Metachirality is a stronger form of chirality. It applies to objects or systems that are chiral and where, in addition, their mirror image has a symmetry group that differs from the symmetry group of the original object or system.

Orientation (space) - In mathematics, orientability is a property of some topological spaces such as real vector spaces, Euclidean spaces, surfaces, and more generally manifolds that allows a consistent definition of "clockwise" and "anticlockwise". A space is orientable if such a consistent definition exists.
