Brief facts about stes:

Seasonal thermal energy storage, also known as inter-seasonal thermal energy storage, is the storage of heat or cold for periods of up to several months. The thermal energy can be collected whenever it is available and be used whenever needed, such as in the opposing season. For example, heat from solar collectors or waste heat from air conditioning equipment can be gathered in hot months for space heating use when needed, including during winter months. Waste heat from industrial process can similarly be stored and be used much later or the natural cold of winter air can be stored for summertime air conditioning. STES stores can serve district heating systems, as well as single buildings or complexes. Among seasonal storages used for heating, the design peak annual temperatures generally are in the range of 27 to 80 °C, and the temperature difference occurring in the storage over the course of a year can be several tens of degrees.

Central solar heating - Central solar heating is the provision of central heating and hot water from solar energy by a system in which the water is heated centrally by arrays of solar thermal collectors and distributed through district heating pipe networks.

District heating - District heating is a system for distributing heat generated in a centralized location through a system of insulated pipes for residential and commercial heating requirements such as space heating and water heating.

Geosolar - A solar combisystem provides both solar space heating and cooling as well as hot water from a common array of solar thermal collectors, usually backed up by an auxiliary non-solar heat source.

Ice house (building) - An ice house, or icehouse, is a building used to store ice throughout the year, commonly used prior to the invention of the refrigerator.

Ice pond - An ice pond is a large volume of ice or snow produced by natural winter freezing. The ice is then used for cooling or air conditioning. Before refrigeration was common, ice ponds were mined by ice companies, with product transported to consumers and food businesses through much of the year.

Solar pond - A solar pond is a pool of saltwater which collects and stores solar thermal energy. The saltwater naturally forms a vertical salinity gradient also known as a "halocline", in which low-salinity water floats on top of high-salinity water.
