Brief facts about allergies:
Allergies, also known as allergic diseases, are various conditions caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to typically harmless substances in the environment. These diseases include hay fever, food allergies, atopic dermatitis, allergic asthma, and anaphylaxis. Symptoms may include red eyes, an itchy rash, sneezing, coughing, a runny nose, shortness of breath, or swelling. Note that food intolerances and food poisoning are separate conditions. Common allergens include pollen and certain foods. Metals and other substances may also cause such problems. Food, insect stings, and medications are common causes of severe reactions. Their development is due to both genetic and environmental factors. The underlying mechanism involves immunoglobulin E antibodies, part of the body's immune system, binding to an allergen and then to a receptor on mast cells or basophils where it triggers the release of inflammatory chemicals such as histamine.
Allergic shiner - An allergic shiner is a dark discoloration below the eye that is associated with allergic rhinitis and is often seen in conjunction with bilateral Dennie–Morgan folds. These shiners are caused by venous congestion within the infraorbital groove, particularly from the nose.
GWAS in allergy - GWAS in allergy is a study of a meta-analysis of genome-wide association study in which allergy is associated with different susceptibility loci. The three allergic phenotypes studied were to cat, dust mites and pollen, for which found patients presenting allergic symptoms.
Histamine intolerance - Histamine intolerance is a presumed set of adverse reactions to ingested histamine in food. The mainstream theory accepts that there may exist adverse reactions to ingested histamine, but does not recognize histamine intolerance as a separate condition that can be diagnosed.
Oral allergy syndrome - Oral allergy syndrome or pollen-food allergy syndrome is a type of allergy classified by a cluster of allergic reactions in the mouth and throat in response to eating certain fruits, nuts, and vegetables. It typically develops in adults with hay fever. It is not usually serious.
