The Akai MPC is a series of electronic musical instruments produced by the Japanese company Akai from 1988 onwards. They are grooveboxes that combine features of a sampler, drum machine and MIDI sequencer.
Akai - Akai is a consumer electronics brand name. The original company was founded in 1946 in Tokyo, Japan as Akai Electric Co., Ltd., developing musical and audio equipment. "Akai" means red in Japanese, hence the logo color, earlier also accompanied by a red dot.
Sampler - A sampler is an electronic or digital musical instrument similar in some respects to a synthesizer, but instead of generating new sounds with filters, it uses sound recordings of real instrument sounds, excerpts from recorded songs or other sounds.
Drum Machine - A drum machine is an electronic musical instrument that creates percussion. Drum machines may imitate drum kits or other percussion instruments, or produce unique sounds. Most modern drum machines allow users to program their own rhythms.
Groovebox - The term Groovebox was originally used by Roland Corporation to refer to its MC-303, released in 1996. The term has since entered general use, and dates back to the Movement Computer Systems Drum Computer in 1981.
