Agrivoltaics is the dual use of land for solar energy production and agriculture. The technique was conceived by Adolf Goetzberger and Armin Zastrow in 1981. Agrivoltaics includes multiple methods of combining agriculture with photovoltaics, according to the agricultural activity, including plants, livestock, greenhouses, and pollinator support. Because the sunlight is shared, system design requires trading off objectives such as optimizing crop yield, crop quality, and energy production. Some crops benefit from the increased shade, lessening or even eliminating the trade-off.

Growth of photovoltaics - Between 1992 and 2023, the worldwide usage of photovoltaics increased exponentially. During this period, it evolved from a niche market of small-scale applications to a mainstream electricity source.
